Description

W.-Nr. 1.4031 ( Din X39Cr13 ) is used in the quenched and tempered condition in a host of constructional applications where moderate corrosion and abrasion resistance is required.

Due to its higher carbon content, DIN 1.4031 is more hardenable than W.Nr. 1.4028 and as such is suitable for use as

a blade material.  As for other martensitic grades, optimal corrosion resistance is attained when the steel is in the

hardened condition and the surface is finely ground or polished.

* The stainless steels used for cutlery belong to the martensitic steel family. 

They contain mostly carbon and chromium. However, other alloy elements may be included like molybdenum and vanadium.

 

Carbon possesses such useful properties as hardness, resilience and corrosion resistance. 
For stainless steel, the properties depend on the elements included in its composition. 
Chromium mostly contributes to corrosion resistance. 
Molybdenum also improves corrosion resistance, but in oxidizing situations. 
In addition it improves mechanical resistance in hot conditions.
Vanadium is used in small quantities in martensitic chromium to render them indifferent to overheating. 
It too increases mechanical resistance in hot conditions.
